How to achieve high-brightness display on TFT LCD?

2022 06/14

The design of TFT LCD screen, in addition to meeting the basic product specifications, is also customer-oriented and meets the different needs of customers. Brightness, contrast, response speed, and viewing angle are the most basic optical specifications of TFT LCD. Below, we mainly introduce the high-brightness design of TTFT liquid crystal display. Generally speaking, the display brightness above 500cd/m2 is called high brightness liquid crystal display.

The brightness of a TFT liquid crystal display is the product of the brightness of the backlight and the transmittance of the display. It is a common practice to increase the brightness of a TFT LCD by increasing the brightness of the backlight. A side effect of this high-brightness design countermeasure is increased cost, and the increased temperature of the backlight creates many other quality and reliability issues. The design strategy to fundamentally improve the brightness is to improve the light transmittance of the TFT liquid crystal display. Specifically, the light transmittance of the display screen can be improved in terms of pixel aperture ratio, liquid crystal light transmittance efficiency, polarizer light transmittance, and CF light transmittance. The light transmittance design is the comprehensive result of pixel design and material design, and involves a wide range of parameters and many parameters. One of the main tasks of the highlight design of the TFT liquid crystal display is to effectively balance the relationship between various parameters that affect the transmittance, and finally determine the value of the transmittance.

Based on light transmittance, the relationship between various specifications and display quality is intricate. High-quality display products generally have a larger PPI value, that is, the resolution under the same display size is higher, but the pixel aperture ratio is lower, and the corresponding light transmittance is lower. Similarly, in order to improve the color reproducibility of the liquid crystal display, the color gamut of the CF is required to be large, but increasing the color gamut through CF measures will lead to a decrease in the light transmittance of the CF. Second, different display modes have different degrees of light transmittance. The transmittance of the IPS mode and the VA mode is lower than that of the TN mode, but the viewing angle of the IPS mode and the VA mode is larger. Therefore, the designer can design an ideal TFT LCD liquid crystal display product only by fully grasping the relevant factors of light transmittance.
